Developing a Different World View

Comments by Francesca Penty

Depending on when in my life you asked me this you would have got very different replies. As a child I guess it was a big exciting but sometimes scary place, as I got older anxiety took a hold and my answer could well have been “threatening, a struggle to survive in”.

Many factors shape the way we see the world: our upbringing, personality type, media exposure and experiences determine how we respond to situations. So what we need is to get rid of these hang ups, biases and preconceptions. Great, but how do we spot them in ourselves?

I sat and watched Beauty and the Beast with my daughter the other day, in the story Belle sacrifices her freedom to save her dad and goes to live with the Beast in his cursed castle. Although petrified by her fate she needs to know what she is dealing with and says “Step into the light Beast”. Getting God in on the act throws light on the chaos and exposes our demons. Yes we can see the grime that’s built up in our lives but we can catch His spirit of excitement when He looks at us and sees us as we can be. God is not fazed by the rubbish in our heads and lives, it’s an opportunity to learn, grow and change into who we were made to be.

When you view the world through Gods spirit everything is infected with His love, glory, joy and hope. Nothing is excluded and things are more than they appear.

If you asked me how I view the world today I’d have to say it’s exciting, unpredictable, full of opportunities, stressful at times but with God there’s always something good around the corner.
