John 14:27 (New King James Version : 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Did you know there are two kinds of peace? What does Jesus mean when He says His peace is different than the peace the world can give us? When we use the term ‘rest in peace’ we are suggesting a release from perhaps a long illness or a life of struggle. As a parent I often wish for five minutes peace, again an end to something, generally noise and chaos! So generally our worldly idea of peace is escape from or the cessation of something unpleasant.

The peace Jesus is talking about is not the absence of something but the presence. It’s being aware of God’s spirit within us and fulfilling our needs through it.

So many times in my life I’ve thought ‘if I could just have that, or this situation would be resolved, I’d be happy’. When we do get what we want we then worry that it won’t last or we want something bigger and better, the peace we craved is not gained by things.

The Hebrew word Shalom translates into completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquillity, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony. It sounds wonderful and far greater than a new sofa or car!
